April 2001 - Present FICTION WRITING

    I took time out from my technical career to write 2 novels, both of which have sold to Barclay books in the US

 

Nov 2000 - April 2001 AGILENT TECHNOLOGIES - TECHNICAL AUTHOR/ANALYST (CONTRACTOR)

  • Defined and delivered a set of management procedures providing a standard approach to delivering projects across a geographically diverse organisation.
  • Delivered these procedures across the corporate Intranet using the VISIO toolkit and HTML.
  • Trained staff in the use of these procedures.
  • Maintained the procedures, ensuring their continual accuracy.

 

Oct 1999 - Apr 2000 SCOTTISH AND SOUTHERN ENERGY PLC - PROJECT MANAGER (CONTRACTOR)

  • Planned and managed the implementation of Phase 1 of a Computerised Maintenance and Materials Management System (MAXIMO) covering inventory management, equipment/materials maintenance, work scheduling, stock and non-stock purchasing and invoicing.
  • Managed the rollout out the system to over 150 users in SSE power generation sites across the UK.
  • Managed data migration from 3 separate legacy systems (1 Mainframe, 2 PC-Based).
  • Managed the third party suppliers (PSDI).
  • Managed SSE's internal support team for the project (3-5 staff).
  • Set up issue management, change control and quality control procedures.
  • Planned and managed User Acceptance testing.
  • Analysed SSE's reporting needs from the system and coded and delivered 30 report programs written in SQR
  • Planned activities for Phase 2 of the implementation.

 

Jun 1999 - Sep 1999 NATIONAL AUSTRALIA GROUP - TECHNICAL AUTHOR/DESIGNER (CONTRACTOR)

  • Wrote a data design specification for the conversion/migration of 10 source databases on 3 different platforms (1 IBM mainframe CICS COBOL system, 1 Tandem based ORACLE system, one BULL Mini COBOL based) to an ORACLE based data warehouse on a single SUN platform.
  • Wrote and collated Program Specifications for the routines to carry out the above conversions.

 

Aug 1998 - Apr 1999 SCOTTISH HYDRO ELECTRIC PLC - TECHNICAL AUTHOR/ANALYST (CONTRACTOR)

  • Analysed the quality procedure requirements for the operational control of a new Data Centre.
  • Wrote quality procedures and work instructions for the operation of the Data Centre to ISO9002 standards for Quality Management using the VISIO toolkit.
  • Designed and implemented an Intranet presence for the Data Centre consisting of 30 HTML pages with some JAVASCRIPT.
  • Implemented the Quality Management procedures on the Hydro-Electric Intranet.
  • Maintained the quality management procedures, ensuring their accuracy.

 

Feb 1997 - Jun 1998 SCOTTISH HYDRO ELECTRIC PLC - PROJECT MANAGER (CONTRACTOR)

  • Negotiated Service Level Agreement (SLA) with a third party supplier for hardware and software support for desktop services.
  • Managed service delivery of support for desktop services by managing the relationship with the third party supplier.
  • Introduced PRINCE project management standards and procedures.
  • Negotiated SLA with a third party supplier for the system administration of Windows NT servers.
  • Prepared proposal, terms of reference, and invitation to tender for a project to standardise network protocols in the business.
  • Analysed user requirements for a stock control system, produced User Requirements specification, performed a market survey of providers and prepared an Invitation to Tender.
  • Designed and authored a suite of over 50 HTML pages for the corporate Intranet detailing Project Management procedures, Risk Assessment procedures and procedures for purchasing IT systems.

 

May 1996 - Nov 1996 NORTH OF SCOTLAND WATER AUTHORITY - SYSTEMS MANAGER

  • In charge of all applications within the water authority, covering Financial Systems (Billing, Payroll and Ledger), Operational Systems (Stores, Fleet Management, Property Register) and Management Systems (E-mail, Personnel).
  • In charge of 5 - 7 analyst programmers for support and development of new and existing systems.
  • Set up procedures for change control and problem handling.
  • Heavily involved in formulation of IT strategy.
  • Planned activities for the whole IT department for 1996-1997 using PMW.

 

May 1991 - Feb 1996 GRAMPIAN HEALTH BOARD - PROJECT MANAGER

  • Manager of the Patient Records System, a Scotland-wide clinical management system for the follow up of high-risk patients.
  • Managed the roll out of the system to four other sites in Scotland.
  • Ran a development team of up to 7 staff.
  • From Feb 1995 managed the re-write of the system to a Client-Server environment, using RAD techniques with ORACLE as the RDBMS , the Top*Case Case tool with X-Windows (UNIX) and MS-Windows (PC) as the front end and SQR as the reporting tool..
  • Heavily involved in project planning and estimating.
  • Proficient in Function Point estimating and MS-Project.

  • I worked in London/SE England for SEMA, a large European Software House/Services Company, for more than 8 years, starting as a programmer.
  • Detailed here are some of the major tasks undertaken.

 

Aug 1990 - May 1991 SEMA - PROJECT MANAGER

  • Manager of the Patient Administration System for East Anglia Health Authority.
  • Introduced SEMA technical standards and working practices to the staff at the computing centre.
  • Support service provided for 200 users across a wide area network.
  • Managed 3 -5 support staff.

 

Feb 1989 - Aug 1990 SEMA - CUSTOMER SUPPORT SERVICES MANAGER

  • Managed SEMA's Financial Customer Support Services Group.
  • Contract manager of 8 application support contracts.
  • Managed three teams of programmers, ranging from 8 to 12 staff. The teams' work involved help desk support, problem management, bug fixing, upgrades, training and enhancements for financial applications including portfolio management and foreign exchange dealing.

 

Feb 1988 - Feb 1989 SEMA - STAFF MANAGER

  • Resource manager for 25 - 30 IT staff, placing staff in appropriate roles in IT projects across the UK and Europe.
  • Responsibility for performance assessment, salary review, promotions, redundancies and disciplinary procedures.
  • Responsible for graduate recruitment and arranging milk round visits.
  • Responsible for organising staff training.

 

Jan 1986 - Aug 1990 SEMA - TRAINER

  • Ran and organised a training course for analyst programmers on good practice in system design.
  • Ran three four-day courses per year.

 

Jun 1987 - Feb 1988 SEMA - PROJECT LEADER

  • Responsible for application development and system test for a 200+ user Foreign Exchange dealing room for National Westminster bank.
  • Ran 3 teams of programmers, ranging from 9 - 12 staff.

  • From November 1985 to June 1987 I was team leader in the Customer Services Group, supporting foreign exchange dealing room systems, with a team of 4-6 staff.
  • From September 1982 to November 1985 I worked on a number of projects as a programmer for SEMA, working on Mini and Micro based systems for financial services companies covering applications in Credit Card Management, Automated Teller Machines, FOREX Dealing Rooms and BACS diskette production.
  • I have programming experience in COBOL, PL/1, BASIC and 8 and 16 bit assemblers
